Nestled in a valley surrounded by 7 fells, the village of Äkäslompolo is home to 400 residents 200km north of the Arctic Circle. Located on the doorstep of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, Finland’s third largest national park, Äkäslompolo is enveloped by breath-taking scenery and is the perfect setting for Arctic adventure.
The Arctic Break is designed for adults offering longer safaris in groups of 6 to 8 persons. Search for the Northern Lights, ride into the National Forest with snowmobiles, mush your own team of huskies over 20km and try one of Finland’s favourite pastimes – cross country skiing. In December we offer this break with our direct flights with British Airways from London Gatwick. You can also step into the wild between January and April.
The silent fox gallops across the Arctic fells, its tail whipping up the powder snow as it goes… according to Sami legend, it is this very fox that is responsible for the renowned iridescent green and purple hues, its tail causing sparks to fly and light the night sky in the most breathtaking way imaginable.
Staking its claim amongst the world’s greatest natural phenomena, the Aurora Borealis is one of the most awe-inspiring and mysterious sights to behold. The result of solar winds sending charged particles towards Earth’s atmosphere, the appearance of the Northern Lights cannot be predicted by even the most modern technology, lending them almost mythical status for those hoping to catch a glimpse. For guests seeking out this great spectacle, the lights appear on average 200 nights a year in Finnish Lapland, and the further North you travel, the more chance you have of being witness. So why not take a trip to this magical part of the world, and who knows, the fox may just be dancing across the snow that night…
For December 2017 we have 2 and 3 night itineraries.
Between January and April 2018 we have a 4 night itinerary.
The small and privately owned Lodge 67̊N is a beautifully decorated hotel, a short walk from the village centre and within 10-15 minutes of all activities. Lodge 67̊N is the prefect base to come back to after a day out in the Arctic North, where you can relax by the fire and wait for the Northern Lights to appear over the fells.
